In today’s world, the message of Christianity is often simplified to: “God wants you to live your best life now.” Many treat God like a spiritual Santa Claus — Someone who should give them exactly what they want, when they want it. But the truth is, God wants us to seek something far greater: heavenly treasure, not just earthly rewards.
But when we strip away the noise and look at this through the eyes of a parent, something becomes very clear.
Imagine if your child only loved you because of the toys you could give them. Imagine if your worth to them was measured by how quickly you fulfilled their demands. You know vegetables are better than candy, but they want sugar all day. A loving parent gives what is good — not always what is wanted.
God is the same.
He cares more about shaping our hearts than satisfying our cravings.
Where Your Treasure Is…
Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
So here’s the question: What treasure are we really chasing?
When we obsess over having a “better life now,” we’re revealing what we value most — life on earth. But Jesus gave us two clear paths:
- If you choose your best life now, you don’t value eternal life very much.
- If you choose eternal life, you won’t place your highest hope in this life.
Which one are we choosing?
Where does your treasure truly lie?
What Jesus Actually Promised
Jesus never promised an easy life. In fact, He said the opposite:
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33
We’re not guaranteed comfort, success, or a problem-free path.
But we are promised something far greater — eternal life with Him.
That is our real reward.
That is our true Promised Land.
This life is not the destination… it’s the race we run until the finish line.
So why do we cling so tightly to a world that cannot compare to what God has prepared for us?
“But Doesn’t God Want Me to Be Happy?”
Of course He does — but His definition of happiness is eternal, not temporary.
A good parent doesn’t give only candy. A good God doesn’t give only comfort.
The best thing God can give us is eternity with Jesus.
That is His “best life” for us — a treasure we can’t even imagine.
But here’s the problem:
His treasure isn’t always the treasure we chase.
Living With Heaven in Mind
The apostle Paul understood this better than anyone. He said:
“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” — Philippians 1:21
As long as we’re on earth, we live for Jesus.
And when our life here ends, we gain everything — because we finally see Him face to face.
Scripture tells us that we are in this world, but not of it.
Our home is heaven. Our hope is heaven. Our treasure is heaven.
Raising Heaven-Focused Kids
This is the mindset our children need — not one that chases comfort, but one that chases Christ.
Teach them:
- Bad things may happen, but our eyes stay on Jesus.
- This world is not the goal — eternity is.
- Real treasure is found with Christ — not in things that fade.
When our kids learn to set their hearts on what matters most, they grow into confident, joyful followers of Jesus who aren’t shaken by the world around them.
Let’s raise a generation whose treasure is in heaven — and whose hope is forever.
